But Stanley Milgram’s research in the early 1960s proved that most of us are wrong about our own morality.

The results didn't just surprise the public; they horrified the psychologists who predicted them. They figured maybe 1% to 3% of people—the literal "sadists"—would go all the way to the end of the shock generator. They were off by about 62 percent.

The Setup That Tricked the World

Milgram didn't set out to study cruelty. He wanted to understand the Holocaust. How could thousands of "ordinary" people participate in mass murder just because they were told to? Every time the Learner got a word-pair association wrong, the Teacher had to flip a switch. Each mistake increased the voltage. The Learner wasn't actually being shocked, but the Teacher didn't know that. Around 75 volts, the Learner would grunt. At 150 volts, he’d shout that he wanted out. At 300 volts, he’d scream about a heart condition. After 330 volts, he went dead silent.

Why People Didn't Just Stop

When the Teachers hesitated—and they almost always did—the Experimenter didn't threaten them. He didn't offer money. He just used four specific "prods."

This is the "agentic state." Milgram argued that when we’re in a hierarchy, we stop seeing ourselves as responsible for our own actions. We see ourselves as "agents" for the person in charge. You aren't the one hurting the person; the guy in the lab coat is. It’s a terrifying mental shift that happens faster than you'd like to admit.

The Myths We Believe About Authority

People love to criticize the Milgram experiment by saying it was a product of its time. They claim people were more "docile" in the 1960s or that the Cold War made everyone compliant. That’s a comforting lie.

Recent replications, like the one conducted by Jerry Burger in 2009, showed almost identical results. Burger stopped the experiment at 150 volts (the point of no return in Milgram’s original data), and found that 70% of participants were still willing to continue. Gender didn't matter. Education didn't matter. Age didn't matter.

We also assume that the "obedient" people were just mean. In reality, the people who went to 450 volts were often the ones who felt the most stress. They weren't enjoying it. They were trapped in a social contract. They had agreed to participate, and breaking that agreement felt more "wrong" to them in the moment than the abstract harm they were causing to a stranger behind a wall.

What Happens When the Authority is Remote

Milgram tweaked his variables to see what changed the outcome. The results offer a blueprint for how to resist—or how to be manipulated.

If the Experimenter gave orders over the phone instead of standing in the room, obedience dropped significantly. Some participants even "cheated" by giving lower shocks than they were told to, while lying to the Experimenter and saying they were following orders. Physical proximity to the authority figure is a huge factor in how much power they have over you.

Conversely, if the Teacher had to physically force the Learner’s hand onto a shock plate, obedience dropped to about 30%. It’s much harder to hurt someone when you have to feel their skin. This explains why modern warfare—using drones and long-range missiles—is so psychologically different from hand-to-hand combat. When you distance the "authority" from the "agent," and the "agent" from the "victim," the moral friction disappears.

The Ethics That Changed Science

You can't run the Milgram experiment today. It’s basically illegal in the world of academic psychology. The level of "psychological torture" the participants endured was considered too high. Many went home believing they had killed or seriously injured a man. Even though they were debriefed afterward, the realization of their own capacity for evil stayed with them.

Milgram was attacked for this. Critics said he was a "manipulator" and that he traumatized his subjects for fame. But Milgram defended his work until his death. He argued that the "trauma" was simply the truth of the human condition. The "prods" are different now. They sound like "it’s just standard procedure" or "I’m just following the brief." If you want to avoid falling into the agentic state, you have to practice "disobedient" muscles.

Start by questioning the "why" behind small orders. Notice when you’re doing something purely because you’re afraid of the social awkwardness of saying "no." The Milgram experiment didn't show that humans are inherently evil. It showed that we are dangerously social. We would rather be "good" participants in a broken system than "difficult" people in a moral one.

Next time you're told to do something that feels off, remember the 65%. They weren't different from you. They just didn't realize they had the power to stop until the switch was already flipped. Pay attention to your physical reaction to authority. If your stomach knots up but you find yourself saying "okay" anyway, that's the experiment starting all over again in your own life. Break the cycle by realizing that the "authority" only has the power you choose to give it.
